Slitting Wood Battens on a Multi-Rip Saw: Specs, Blade Tooth Counts, and a Day's Output
Batten slitting starts with specs, not with the machine. Common batten sizes, multi-rip vs band saw, tooth count and blade thickness matching, plus fixes for uneven width, fuzz and split ends - with an FAQ.
On the shop floor the question keeps coming back: "Which machine do I use to split wood battens?" Before talking machines, put three numbers on the table - how many finished sizes you run, how many pieces a day you ship, and whether the timber is dry, green or reclaimed.
1. Fix the specifications before you pick a machine
Slitting battens is not a machine-first decision. Write the finished sizes down first:
Width x thickness - ceiling battens are commonly 20x40, 30x40 and 30x50 mm; partition and floor battens are usually 40x60 and 50x70 mm;
How many sizes - changing over once a day and changing over five or six times a day are two completely different machines;
Condition of the timber - dry, green, or reclaimed formwork. Moisture content decides whether the saw pinches or runs clean.
Once the size list is clear, the blade arrangement and the number of spacer sets you need are basically decided too.
2. Multi-rip saw, band saw, or a manual gang - what actually differs

In one line: fixed sizes and concentrated volume point to a multi-rip saw; mixed material and small batches suit a band saw.
3. Matching tooth count and blade thickness
Battens are mostly softwood - pine, fir, poplar - so there is no need to pile on teeth.

- Pine, fir and other softwoods — 24-30 teeth — Fewer teeth clear chips faster, feed rate can go up
- Birch, oak and other hardwoods — 36-40 teeth — Denser teeth cut cleaner, but slow the feed
- Reclaimed formwork, nail-prone stock — Few teeth, thicker plate — Less chipping when it hits metal
Do not chase thinness for its own sake. A thin plate saves material, but slitting feeds fast with heavy side load; too thin and the blade wobbles, which makes the width less stable. Hold the size first, then talk about saving those tenths of a millimetre.
4. The arithmetic of a day's output
Batten production comes down to three lines:
Output - a multi-rip saw puts out many pieces in one feed, so with the same crew and the same hours the volume is several times a band saw's;
Labour - general workers pick it up after a few shifts, with no need to keep a band sawyer on the payroll;
Secondary processing - the sawn face is straight and the widths match, so most stock goes straight to packing and skips a planing pass.
On kerf the multi-rip saw does lose, and it is worth saying plainly: multi-rip kerf is commonly 2.4-3.5 mm against roughly 1.2-2.0 mm for a band saw, which costs about 2%-3% in recovery. On battens that arithmetic still works out - what the wider kerf eats is bought back by throughput, labour and the process step you no longer run.
In the batten business the comparison is not how powerful one machine is, but how many pieces a day it ships and how steady the width stays. Hold the size and the orders keep coming.
5. The three faults you see most when slitting
Width drifting high and low - check the hold-down roll clearance and fence parallelism first, then blade runout. If the stock is not held down, it wanders and the width wanders with it.
Fuzzy faces and saw marks - usually dull tips or too fast a feed. A 24-tooth blade on softwood dulls quickly once the cut load goes up, so regrind when it is due. Split ends and cracked tails - the tail of the piece is unsupported and springs once it leaves the rolls. Check the outfeed hold-down and the separating guide, or leave a trimming allowance.
FAQ
Q: Can a multi-rip saw and a band saw both be used for battens?
A: Yes, split the work. Break down large or irregular stock on the band saw first, then slit the sized material on the multi-rip saw so neither machine sits idle. Small shops with low, mixed volume are better off keeping the band saw for now.
Q: Can reclaimed formwork and demolition timber go straight onto the multi-rip saw?
A: Not straight on. Pull nails and stones first; impact with hard objects is the main cause of chipped teeth. For nail-prone stock, keep a separate set of fewer-tooth, thicker blades and never mix them with good blades.
Q: We change sizes several times a day - is setting up a hassle?
A: It depends on the hold-down and spacer design. Modular blade stacks switch thickness by adding or removing spacers, which is far quicker than moving blades one by one. If you change over often, ask this question at the selection stage.
