Uneven thickness and stepped cuts on a multi-rip saw usually trace back to one of five components, not a worn-out machine. This guide maps symptoms to causes, gives a check order, and covers day-to-day accuracy upkeep.
One sentence comes up on the shop floor again and again: "My saw is cutting boards half a millimetre off thickness, and some of them come out stepped - is the machine worn out?" Hold off on replacing it. Nine times out of ten a multi-rip saw's accuracy problem is not a dead machine; it is a few components that are loose, dirty or blunt.
1. First work out which kind of "inaccurate" you have
Different symptoms have completely different causes. Lay a row of freshly sawn pieces side by side and look at whether the mismatch is regular or random:
- Symptom — What it looks like — Usual cause
- Even-depth stepped mismatch — The whole row misses by the same amount, like a staircase — Top and bottom (or left and right) blade sets not on the same plane
- Random stepping — Every piece is off by a different amount — Blade wobble: distortion, burnt plate, chips trapped in spacers
- Gradual thickness drift — Accurate at one end, off at the other — Fence not parallel, uneven hold-down roll clearance
- Run-out and snipe at the ends — Infeed end and outfeed end disagree — Infeed guide and outfeed hold-down not aligned
- Dark, scorched faces — Size is close but the surface is rough — Dull tips, feed too fast, poor chip clearance
Remember this first: regular mismatch points at the arbor, random mismatch points at the blade, drift points at the fence, and end problems point at the hold-down.
2. Five components, checked in this order
Keep to the order and you will pull apart half as much.
Blades - take them off and lay them flat on a surface plate to check for distortion, then check face runout. A blade that has been burnt rarely comes back; do not run it "just a bit longer" - a distorted blade will wear out the spacers and the arbor with it.
Spacers - the most common cause and the easiest to overlook. One layer of sawdust trapped on a spacer is enough to mount the blade out of true. Wipe every spacer clean before mounting, and use one size of spacer per blade set - do not mix and match to make up a width.
Arbors and spindle - the top and bottom blade sets must sit on the same horizontal plane; that is the direct cause of even-depth stepping. Spindle runout is the root of accuracy, generally held within 0.02 mm in the trade (check your machine maker's own standard), and anything beyond that means inspecting the bearings and checking coaxiality.
Fence and hold-down - measure the distance from fence to blade at the front and the back with a square; a large difference cuts a gradually drifting thickness. Hold-down rolls must press firmly top and bottom - uneven clearance lets the stock lift and twist.
Feed and guideways - an unsteady feed always cuts an uneven face. Dust in the guideways and dry lubrication make the stock stutter; dust on the table stops it bedding down flat, which cuts a thickness error straight away.
3. Blunt teeth pull the size off too
This one puzzles people: a dull blade does not cut wood, it tears it. Once the tips go blunt the cutting force rises, the side load on the blade grows and it starts to wobble - and as the wobble grows the thickness drifts and the stepping appears.
So "regrind when it is due" is not a maintenance slogan, it is an accuracy issue. The test is simple: same timber, same feed, and the face goes from smooth to saw-marked while the chips turn from flakes to powder - take the blade off and grind it.
Shops with heavy blade use are better off with a Changgong grinder: air-free servo drive, automatic tool setting, left/right tooth recognition, covering 150-600 mm blades. Hand grinding relies on feel, and one angle off shows up as a size error when the blade goes back on; automatic grinding holds angles far more consistently and gets more regrinds out of each plate.
A multi-rip saw's accuracy is not bought, it is kept. Every machine is accurate enough the day it leaves the factory; what differs is whether anyone looks after it afterwards.
4. What to do daily, weekly and monthly

- Weekly — Check fence parallelism, blade face runout and spacers, check drives for looseness
- Monthly — Check spindle runout, machine and foot levelling, and that speeds and feeds are steady
Most accuracy problems are simply the two minutes a shift that nobody did, accumulated. And after spacers are changed and rolls reset, cut one piece and measure it before running the batch - do not find out at the end of a stack.

Q: Is a thickness error of a few tenths of a millimetre normal?
A: Start with what your customer accepts. Sized stock such as battens and pallet parts holds tight tolerances; rough breaking down is looser. But on one machine and one batch the tolerance should be steady - if it swings, that is a fault, not "how the machine is".
Q: I fitted a new blade and the size got worse - why?
A: Check three things: sawdust trapped under the spacers, mixed spacer or blade widths, and whether the blade and spacers were wiped clean and stacked in the right order. A new blade is more sensitive to runout, so assembly error is magnified.
Q: Sizes are never stable when I cut green timber - is that the machine?
A: Not entirely. Look at chip clearance and feed stability first - those two dominate. Green stock springs back more, so sizes are genuinely harder to hold than in dry stock; leave a little allowance.
