The blade is the only part of a multi-rip saw that wears every single day. An alloy blade costs a few hundred yuan and a regrind costs a few dozen - yet plenty of shops will happily buy good blades and then begrudge sending them out to be ground. The result: furry sawn faces, climbing amps, and tips disappearing faster than they should. That account deserves proper arithmetic.
1. Four signals that say "send it for grinding"
A blade does not go dull all at once. In the shop there are four things you can see:

- Thickness drifting, top/bottom blades mismatched — Same spacers, but sizes no longer hold — Tips rounded, cutting force up

- Higher spindle amps, hard feeding — Ammeter sits noticeably above normal — Load is up - do not push through
Look closer with a magnifier: when a thin white line appears on the cutting edge, or edge wear reaches roughly 0.2 mm, schedule the regrind. Do not wait for a big chip-out - by then there is often little left to save.
2. A few habits before and after the shift beat buying expensive blades
The same blade set lasts three months for one shop and six for another; the difference is mostly in mounting and care:
Clean before mounting - scrape sawdust and resin off the spindle and flanges, and use flanges of one specification across the whole set, or the stack will wobble and vibrate at speed;
Look at every blade - pull out chipped, cracked or warped blades separately; never run them inside a good set, since one bad blade can wear out its neighbours;
Pick out hard objects before feeding - nails and grit are the number one cause of chipped teeth, especially with reclaimed lumber;
Clear resin often - when sawing resinous species such as pine, blow out the gullets with air every two hours; packed resin blocks heat dissipation and dulls the edge fast;
Dry and hang at the end of the shift - moisture is the main cause of rust. Hang spare blades vertically or lay them flat one per layer; never stack several with no separation, or they bend and are effectively scrap.
3. How to grind so the work is not wasted
This is where many shops have a blind spot. The common habit is to grind the face only. The professional approach is to grind mainly the back of the tooth, with the face as secondary, and the point is to keep the original rake and clearance angles unchanged.

Wait for a chip-out and the same blade is scrapped in one go.

Q: How many times can a blade be reground, and when do I replace it?
A: Standard alloy blades take three to five regrinds depending on profile wear. After each grinding, check tooth width and edge condition; when the tooth land is nearly gone, or the body shows cracks or clear distortion, replace it rather than forcing more life out of it.
