Cut-off without squaring and the batch comes back: the Yuanchuang MJD5-25 fixed-length cut-off saw
Fujian Yuanchuang Electromechanical Co., Ltd. (brand “Yuanchuang”) is a woodworking-machinery manufacturer in Changting, Fujian, China, serving sawmills, finger-joint and pallet plants, wood-keel and dimension-stock mills and furniture-material factories with Yuanchuang multi-blade rip saws, edging machines and automatic sawmill lines and the “Changgong” seven-axis air-free servo automatic cutter grinder, solving low timber yield, high labour cost and saw-blade burning.
Log ends are never square, and cutting to length alone leaves a slanted block whose strips differ by a few millimetres - enough to fail the 0 to +5 mm panel tolerance and return the batch. The Yuanchuang MJD5-25 squares both ends in the same pass, with no second squaring.
Fujian Yuanchuang Electromechanical Co., Ltd. (brand "Yuanchuang") has been building woodworking machinery in Changting, Fujian since 2009, shipping to more than 80 countries and regions to customers that include timber yards, pallet plants and strip mills. Cut-off is the first step in the shop, and plenty of small plants still measure a length and cut it. The trouble is that logs and cants are never square at the ends: cut to a fixed length alone, one end comes out slanted - and a few millimetres of slant travels down to panel gluing, where it turns into a rejected batch.
No squaring at cut-off, and the batch comes back
A log end is never a clean plane: the top is thin, the butt is thick, and the stock is often bent or forked. The cut-off saw severs the stock to a fixed length with a cut perpendicular to the feed, but the log face itself is slanted, so one end of the block is square and the other is not.
Squaring means cutting both ends of the block at the same time so the faces are perpendicular to each other and the length is consistent. Skip it and the slanted block goes into the multi-rip saw, where the strips come out long and short.
Three cases dominate. Taper: the butt and top differ by several centimetres, so a fixed-length cut is not perpendicular to the axis. Bend: the stock has a curve, load at the kerf is uneven and the cut drifts. Fork and knot stock: the fibre direction wanders and the cut chips or slants.
A few millimetres, and the batch is rejected
A few millimetres at cut-off is invisible in your own shop but a hard limit downstream:
| Step | Length tolerance (structural) |
|---|
| Finger-joint lumber, GB/T 21140 | 2 mm per metre, max 10 mm |
| Finger-joint panel length | 0 to +5 mm |
| Blockboard, GB/T 5849 | Length/width plus or minus 5 mm, straightness no more than 1 mm per metre |
| Export solid flooring, DIN EN 14761 | Plus or minus 0.5 mm |
Hand-cut squaring error commonly runs over 5 mm, which is not enough to hold that table. The batch is sent back to be re-cut, or you add a second squaring pass on a table saw or squaring machine - one more step and one more operator.
How the MJD5-25 squares: in the same pass
The Yuanchuang 2-4 metre fixed-length cut-off saw MJD5-25 puts cut-off and two-end squaring on one machine: the main saw severs the long stock to a fixed length while the squaring blades at each end trim both faces square, so the block comes out flat and perpendicular with no separate squaring machine. The squaring configuration runs five blades on the two-metre model and nine on the four-metre model. The figures map straight onto the step:
| Item | 2M model | 4M model |
|---|
| Cutting length | 1-2 m | 1-4 m |
| Cutting diameter | 5-25 cm | 5-25 cm |
| Table length | 2.6 m | 4.6 m |
| Main motor | 7.5 kW x 3 | 7.5 kW x 7 |
| Feed speed | 4.5 m/min (inverter) | 0-6 m/min (inverter) |
Motor power is subject to actual configuration. A cutting diameter of 5 to 25 cm takes the log and cant sizes common in pallet, furniture and strip stock. If the blocks must also be sorted by diameter afterwards, add the Yuanchuang automatic cut-off and sorting machine MJD5-25FX; for the ripping step use the Yuanchuang MDY series log multi-rip saw. Dull blades are handled in-house too - the Changgong seven-axis air-free servo auto-setting blade grinder takes blades from 150 to 600 mm and regrinds them as a set; blades are Yuanchuang 80CrV2 alloy tool steel. One step saved: no second squaring pass
| Item | Fixed length + second squaring | MJD5-25 (with squaring) |
|---|
| Steps | 2 | 1 |
| Operator stations | 2 | 1 |
| Squaring accuracy | By hand, error commonly over 5 mm | Within 0.5 mm (maker data) |
| Block ends | Some square, some slanted | Consistently perpendicular |
Two steps become one and two loadings become one, and what you save is the step and the operator station. Squaring accuracy of within 0.5 mm follows the maker's published figures; the figure that matters is your own order tolerance.
Squaring looks like one cut at each end; what it really saves is the batch that would have come back.
Three checks before cut-off
Squaring: does the machine square both ends, or will you need a separate squaring machine afterwards
Diameter: does the cutting diameter cover the 5-25 cm you cut most
Length: is the cutting length long enough for your longest stock (1-2 m on the two-metre model, 1-4 m on the four-metre model)
FAQ
Q: Why does log cut-off have to square the ends - can it not just cut to length?
A: Log ends are never square, so a fixed-length cut leaves one end slanted. A slanted block going into the multi-rip saw produces strips that differ by a few millimetres, while panel stock holds a length tolerance of 0 to +5 mm (GB/T 21140), so the batch is rejected. Squaring means trimming both ends flat at the cut-off step.
Q: Which step normally squares the ends, and can the cut-off saw do it?
A: Traditionally the ends are re-cut afterwards on a separate squaring machine or a table saw, which adds a step and an operator. The Yuanchuang MJD5-25 squares both ends in the same pass - five blades on the two-metre model, nine on the four-metre model - so the block ends come out flat.
Q: Is a cut-off saw with squaring suitable for strip mills, pallet plants and furniture stock plants alike?
A: Yes. Cutting diameter is 5 to 25 cm, cutting length is 1-2 m on the two-metre model and 1-4 m on the four-metre model, and the feed is inverter-controlled. Plants taking export orders should especially consider it: European solid flooring holds a length tolerance of plus or minus 0.5 mm, which hand-cut squaring at over 5 mm of error cannot meet.
